Out of space on a datastore

$
0
0

ESXi 5.1.0, 1065491 (single server)

Guest - a linux server, (currently powered off)

Resides on its own datastore “datastore2_vmfs5” which is 558.25GB, it has 2.40GB free

vmdk is a single thin provisioned 450GB disk which looks to be 450GB....

There is a snapshot that is about 105GB

Datastore1 is used for other production guests, only has ~200GB free, so not a candidate for storage vmotion (besides, it is only 550GB so empty it would still not be a candidate)

No additional space in the Dell T110 II or on the raid controller to add additional disks

AFAIK to delete the snapshot you have to have the space of the snapshot free + a little additional? In this case that means there is no way to delete this snapshot unless we add another datastore (perhaps via iSCSI/NFS NAS?), move it over to that ~800GB datastore & then run a snapshot delete? Is there anything that can be done with it as it is now (guessing not)?

Thanks for the assist!

VMWare Workstation 12 and Linux Mint 18 (Ubuntu 16.04) and vmware tools or open-vmware-tools

I created a new virtual machine using VMWare Workstation 12.1.1 build-3770994 with a guest OS of Linux Mint 18 (which is build on top of Ubuntu 16.04). I have two monitors on my system, both 2560x1440. I am unable to get this Linux Mint 18 vm to span across my two monitors when I disable "Accelerate 3D graphics" within my vm's settings, I get an error. I have another virtual machine running Linux Mint 17 on the same VMWare Workstation 12 on this same Windows 10 host machine and it is able to span across my two monitors just fine with "Accelerate 3D graphics" disabled, but it is not using open-vmware-tools.

I read instructions telling me to install open-vm-tools-desktop in this Linux Mint 18 guest OS. I did that. Then I reboot the guest OS. When it boots up, I can click on "Enter full screen mode" in my VMWare Workstation menu, and the guest OS occupies one monitor as expected. When I then click on "Cycle multiple monitors," I get the following error. "The virtual machine could not be changed to selected monitor layout. If you just added a monitor to the host computer, you must power off and power on the virtual machine to use that monitor."

vmware-monitors-error.jpg

I can maximize my VM to autofit just one of my two monitors, but not both. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling open-vm-tools, open-vm-tools-desktop and rebooting. I have tried to use the original vmware tools from /vmware-tools-distrib/vmware-install.pl and that does not work either.

In my vmware.log, I get these two lines that happen when I get the error above.

2016-07-12T15:43:19.068-06:00| mks| I125: ToolsSetDisplayTopology: Sending rpcMsg = DisplayTopology_Set 1 , 0 0 2560 1440

2016-07-12T15:43:24.768-06:00| mks| I125: ToolsSetDisplayTopology: Sending rpcMsg = DisplayTopology_Set 2 , 0 0 2560 1440 , 2560 0 2560 1440

2016-07-12T15:43:24.853-06:00| vcpu-1| I125: TOOLS call to DisplayTopology_Set failed.

When I enable "Accelerate 3D graphics" with the described configuration mentioned above, I am able to use both of my monitors. Why is this the case?

I seem to remember having to disable "Accelerate 3D graphics" in my Linux Mint 17 guest vm because it would randomly crash. I can try to run with 3D acceleration on in this Linux Mint 18 vm and see if it crashes, but why is there a difference with spanning multiple monitors?

Thanks.

Current Gen Macbook, Fusion 8.1, Ubuntu - No Dice

For starters, can someone tell me if it is possible to get Ubuntu 16 working with latest version of fusion with latest version of mac os?

I've never spent more time, and pulled out more hair than I have in 22 years in this field as I have trying to get vmware tools working so guest video resizes/adjust correctly. I usually end of defaulting back to virtual box.

So I installed vmware tools... it gave me warnings that some tools like vsock were already installed.. It went on to say it configured/installed correctly. Init 6. No dice. Video does just resize correctly.

I also tried the recommendation of using open-vm-tools and same issue.

I have never been able to get guest video resizing to work with any linux distribution and any of the last 3 versions of vmware fusion.

Am I merely wasting my time here?

Lenovo x2650 M5 and IBM v3700 San, SAS connected only one path

Hi.

New installation. We have the following:

IBM vb3700 San connected via SAS

3x Lenovo x3650 M5's with N2225 HBA's (two in each host).

So each host connects via two separate HBAs to each SAN controller.

On the san, each HBA is showing and mapped to the correct host. However, in VMWare, it is only seeing one path, and one HBA.

On the san, the OS type selected for each host is generic (as specified in IBM document).

Am I missing something? I should be seeing two connections from each host to the v3700, only the one active path shows.

VMWare Fusion MacPro funning another Mac OS guest

I'm looking to update Mac hardware and I was considering the following scenario and wanted to get some user experience running the same or thoughts:

MacPro (6 - 8 core) running FileMaker Server 15

On same MacPro running MacOS guest OS in VMFusion, which will be running Mac OS Server for File Sharing, Web Services, FTP.

Was thinking of giving the guest OS 2 cores and let FileMaker server take the rest.

Any thoughts about this? I'm just looking to reduce the amount of hardware that I have to buy. Also since Apple no longer offers the cost effecting 4 core MacMini, my options are limited. I'm trying not to go Windows.

Thank for any thoughts on this.

Accessing rails app on Mac host from VM

I’m probably doing something stupid here, but....

I can’t access a rails app running on my Mac from a Windows 10 VM. I have set the network adapter to "Share with My Mac". I can access a PHP site running on my mac via http://[machine_name].local or http://[my-ip-address]. But if I try http://[machine_name].local:3000 or http://[my-ip-address]:3000 to view my rails app I get an error message (to the effect that [my-ip-address] refused to connect). I don’t know if this is an issue at the Mac end (though my firewall is off for testing), the windows end, or to do with my VMWare network adapter setting. Any assistance gratefully received

Virtual disk size incorrect

$

I'm running Fusion 6 on El Captain on my Mac.

I need to expand the virtual disk size to give space for the Windows 10 anniversary update.  According to my finder, my Windows VM is about 32GB.  In Windows 10 on that VM, it says the C: Drive is 46.8GB with about 29 used and 17GB free.  So I shut down the VM so I can expand that disk as the Win10 update says it needs at least 20GB free.  But when I go to the Virtual Machine Library, select that VM, Settings, Hard Disk, it shows the .vmdk file (converted from Boot Camp a while back) and says it's 465.76G.

This makes no sense to me.  It's like it's off by a factor of 10.  But then I thought that maybe it's just an error and I needed to account for that factor of 10.  So to make the disk, say 51GB in reality, I need to enter 510G on this to expand to.  But when I do that, as it's expanding, the Finder shows way more than 5GB being taken away from my free space on my Mac's hard disk.  It had gotten up to almost 20GB and wasn't done when I cancelled the process.

What is going on here?  And how can I fix it?

P2V Ubuntu 14 ESX 5.5 Converter login failure

Hi,

I have run a couple of conversions of P2V on Ububntu servers to my ESX Host. These have completed OK without error.

However one I am currently struggling with commences the process and very quickly I can see in the VSphere Client Console window for the running process, the normal beginning of a Linux boot up.

This arrives at a point requesting a Converter login.( as per image)

Regardless of what credentials I use I cannot proceed as all credentials are rejected.

SSH is enabled on Ubuntu server

I have logged into the Ubuntu server as su ( root account is enabled) and also with my user account that has su privileges.

When I run the VM Center converter, ( From a Win7 Pro x 64 laptop) I can connect to the Ubuntu server OK and also to the ESX host with no errors. All configuration set and the process commences but then arrives at the screen to log on.

None of any of the user names or password combinations will allow progress, even using those suggested on screen.

Eventually the process times out and the VM is built but there is no networking available as network configuration fails at the above e=mentioned booting sequence.

Has anybody any ideas how to successfully login to the Converter ?

ESX stopped mounting my Netapp NFS share

$

I have a strange problem that I can't seem to solve.  I have an ESX system that mounts Netapp (7-mode) NFS shares as the datastores.  We recently moved the system into a new building and this system moved. Now we're powering things up and all of a sudden it won't mount the most important datastore anymore.  When I try to mount it I get this error from ESX:

Call "HostDatastoreSystem.CreateNasDatastore" for object "ha_datastoresystem" on ESX-i "192.168.1.40" failed.

Operations failed, diagnostics report: Cannot open volume: /vmfs/volumes/3423cf33423-3f34234235

From the ESX /var/log/vmkernel.log it says that it's mounted successfully.  I don't see any errors that it failed.

If I try to mount it from the cli, "esxcli storage nfs -H 192.168.1.50 -s /vol/VM_Data -v Netapp_Datatstore" it will actually mount it with no errors, but if you try to run "ls /vmfs/volumes/Netapp_Datastore" it returns a permission denied.  I can look through all my other datastores with no problem.

I've verified that the Netapp is exporting to NFS3 via TCP and MTU 9000 is working throughout the metadata network.

It's also strange that if I create a new datastore on the same Netapp head it fails the same.... If I create a new datastore on the partner node, it works works just fine!

Another strange thing is that I can mount the datastore on the production network (10.10.10.0/24) to a Solaris system and it mounts.  What's strange is that if I'm root, I get a Permissions Denied if I try to look into it.  If I change to a non-privilege user, I can see all the VM's...

Anyway, I'm hoping someone can suggest something because I'm stumped...

High latency spikes on new SSD SAN but only in ESX

$

So we just put in a new Compellent SC4020 SAN and i'm noticing that occasionally ESXi (5.5) is reporting crazy latency like anywhere from 300 to 1000+ms under performance/datastore but on the SAN side i'm seeing an average of 1-2ms (max 10) latency for the same LUN when doing large file copies or lots of small copies. I'm running 10gb to the SAN with jumbo frames, vmkping shows good connectivity with the jumbo frames and i'm not seeing any CPU spikes or anything on either the SAN or host side (when I had latency issues with my old NetApp is was usually because of CPU). Running esxtop is showing the same numbers i'm seeing via the GUI, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised there. I don't see any crazy high numbers for retransmits on the switch (Dell MXL 10/40) and no CPU or other obvious issues jumping out there. The experience within the VMs themselves seems to be just fine, so i'm not sure if there is an actual problem. Is it possible that ESX is just not reporting the numbers properly or is there something else I need to look at?

W2012r2 VM fresh install networking issue

Hello, gents.

I am out of ideas.

I have very weird issue with networking on freshly installed w2012r2 VM.

And I've spent several hours trying to determine on which level there is  an issue and I am still have no full clarity.

The issue is simple - freshly installed VM cannot see network and ping gateway.

I've tried it on 3 ESXi 5.5 (1474528) hosts and on those hosts there are other VMs w2012r2 and w2k8r2 are running and working fine with network.

On this VM it just show Unindetified network and that's it.

I've tried different things: change portgroups, re-create vNICs (both as E1000E and VMXNET3), install/uninstall VMware Tools, upgrade vHW, migrate to other hosts, reinstall from different ISO images, checked networking configuration on host level, tried different IPs in guest OS, disable IPv6, set netowork speed and duplex, recreate routes in Windows and other stuff ...

VM able to ping it's own IP but nothing on the network.

Something i am missing ... but nothing comes to my mind.

What am I missing? Any ideas?

Thank you in advance!

Standard Switch and Promisuous Mode

What setting on a standard switch will stop an operating system from being able to capture packets just by putting its NIC in promiscous mode?  I had thought you had to specifically enable it but it seems there is an OS which is able to capture packets not sent to it - it is running vmxnet3 adapter.  Thanks!

Finding and connecting to vCenter from a vCloud VM object

$

What methods to people use to identify which vCenter a vCloud VM object (CIVM) is behind, then connect to it?

For example, you have a variable called $civms which contain 50 vCloud VM objects (CIVM).

These 50 VMs could be managed by 10 different vCenter servers, so I'd like to know the fastest way to:

  1. identify which vCenter the CIVM object is associated with.
  2. connect to each vcenter (once each of course).

I've seen a few methods but am wondering what the best way is?

SqlServer fails to start after Horizon 7 Agent installation

$

Hi all

I have a Windows 2012 R2 DataCenter Edition with a SQL Server Express 2014 instance. All works without problems.

If I install Horizon 7 Agent 64 bits, after server´s reboot SQl Server instance can´t start.

In the event log I receive the following Event ID: 17120,17826,17182 ans SQl Server fails to start.

I have tried many solutions but anything works. The only thing I can do is remove the Horizon agent and SQL Server works without problems again.

Someone knows how to fix the problem?

Is the Horizon agent not compatible with a SQL Server installation in the same server?

I can´t find a solution.

Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor English.

ESXi 6.0U1a build 3073146 vpxa crashing randomly, host disconnected from vCenter

After recently upgrading vCenter and ESXi to 6.0U1a and installing all patches (now build numbers 3018524 and 3073146 respectively), we began experiencing random host disconnects from vCenter.  The host itself and all guests on it are still alive when it's disconnected; I can SSH to the host and RDP/SSH to guests.  If I literally do nothing, it eventually fixes itself and rejoins vCenter within 15-20 minutes.  We did not have this issue prior to upgrading to 6.0U1a.  This is not the "NETDEV WATCHDOG: vmnic4: transmit timed out" issue.  In fact, the reason we upgraded to the latest build was to get the fix for that particular issue.

I've personally witnessed this happen now on three different hosts and never has it reoccurred on the same host twice that we have noticed.  The vmkernel.log simply shows:

2015-11-18T20:56:42.662Z cpu12:173086)User: 3816: wantCoreDump:vpxa-worker signal:6 exitCode:0 coredump:enabled

The vpxa.log doesn't show anything building up to the disconnection and leaves a large gap after the agent crashes, like so:

vCenter logs simply show the host becoming unreachable so the problem is obviously host-side.

Anyone else seeing similar activity?  This has all the feel of another "known issue" but I don't see any talk about it.  I did open a case with VMware support and am awaiting contact now.

HP Proliant DL360 Gen9 HP ILO embedded partition vs ESXi 6.0

$

HP Proliant DL360 included embedded 1GB ILO partition which can be used as storage. I'm trying to use that for stateless autodeploy caching.

Embedded partition has been enabled in BIOS - I'm able to boot ESXI iso via virtual CD and select that partition as local storage option.

However if I boot into my existing ESXi image already on the server, there appear to be no local storage / I'm unable to detect that ILO embedded partition.

Nothing 'local' can be found under esxcli storage core device list,

/opt/hp/hpssacli/bin/hpssacli ctrl all show config:

Error: No controllers detected. Possible causes:

- The driver for the installed controller(s) is not loaded.

It looks to me I have to load this driver somehow (without rebooting ESXI) and perhaps after that I should be able to detect the HP ILO embedded storage?

Any advices are appreciated!

Thanks,
