System not rebooting. Frozen on "Reached target shutdown"

Hello,

 

I have an issue that my redhat system cant reboot sometimes.

Using:

 

Using the "reboot" or "shutdown -r" command to reboot my system.

System shuts down, but the VM seems to "miss" the shutdown signal. Because of this the reboot does not happen.

 

Console is "frozen" on:

 

A system admin has to remove the power from the VM to stop it. And then manually start it again.

 

It happens from time to time on all systems installed both in my environment, and those that i exported to my customers.

A total of about 20 systems and i have seen it maybe 10 times during more then 100 reboots (in total).

 

Using Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.2 (Maipo)

 

 

I cant seem to find any information about this, so either i cant search or i made an error in some configuration?

Please let me know if you require more information, logs or anything else to assist me.

RS232 License Dongle on Virtual Machine ?

Hey there,

I'm suffering on a little problem with an old windows NT-Server which has Hardware License Dongle on a 25pol Serial Port.

We managed to create a Virtual Machine but the software running on the machine need this license dongle.

Is it possible to create a virtual port and tunnel it to the virtual machine or ? Or maybe there's a different approach ?

Select vMotion virtual NIC takes 60 seconds to complete

Hi, I have a script that sets up VMware hosts networking, but for some reason when it's configuring the VMkernel to be enabled for vMotion, the script sits there waiting, and looking in the vCenter task, it always takes 60 seconds for this action to complete.

 

Is this normal, or is it some kind of fault,

 

Here is my command line that's causing the wait

 

New-VMHostNetworkAdapter -VMhost $vmhost -virtualswitch vSwitch1 -portgroup vMotion_02 -ip $vmotionip1 -subnetmask 255.255.255.0 -Mtu 1500 | Set-VMHostNetworkAdapter -VMotionEnabled $true -Confirm:$False

Adaptec maxView Storage Manager вешает ESXi сервер намертво

Здравствуйте,

Сервер: Тринити E220-M3

Системная плата: X9DRi-F

Процессор: Intel Xeon E5-2630

Контроллер RAID: Adaptec ASR-6805

 

Обновил ESXi до версии 6.0.

Обновил драйвер raid контроллера до официальной версии v1.2.1-41024.

Установил на гипервизоре vmware-esx-provider-arcconf.vib и vmware-esx-provider-arc-cim-provider.vib. После перезагрузки гипервизор висит, виртуальные машины не запускаются, vSphere консоль к гипервизору не коннектится.

Подключаюсь напрямую к серверу, всё висит, даже не могу войти в консоль ESXi. Перезагрузка только ресетом.

Если установить только vmware-esx-provider-arcconf.vib без vmware-esx-provider-arc-cim-provider.vib, гипервизор работает нормально, пока не запустить на гостевой ОС утилиту arcconf с любым параметром (например, arcconf GETCONFIG 1). После этого гипервизор зависает, сервисы на виртуальных машинках отваливаются, пинг не проходит, vSphere консоль коннектится к гипервизору через раз, а если законнектится, то сильно тормозит. Подключаюсь напрямую к серверу ESXi, всё висит. Через некоторое время гипервизор сваливается в розовый экран.

Почитал интернет, нашёл статью http://ask-ru.adaptec.com/app/answers/d ... _id/17403/. Переключил драйвер aacraid на гипервизоре в режим MSI, проблема не решилась.

На прежней версии гипервизора ESXi 5.5 был установлен драйвер контроллера 5.2.1.29800 и cim_vmware_v7_31_18856, arcconf работал как часы, но при такой конфигурации в ESXi6 arcconf контроллер не видит.

Буду очень благодарен за любую помощь в решении данной проблемы.

Newbie.... boot new VM from ISO file

Hi. I have a litte question as I am a beginner. I hope this is ok. I installed the hypervisor and created on the host web interface a new machine. Assigned harddrive and said, which OS should be installed, which should be 2012R2.

Then, I tried to install the OS via USB. On the USB is an iso file with the os. I understood, that I do not need to make a bootable usb stick from the ISO, but I can choose where the ISO file is located. I tried this on the sphere client. But I do not find the usb stick under the settings. Where is my mistake? Thx for your help -.-)

VSAN and VAAI ATS, ATS heartbeat

Hi all,

 

Our the vSphere cluster is configuring with VSAN.

I have the extarnal iSCSI storage connection issues about VAAI ATS heartbeat.

(Enabling or disabling VAAI ATS heartbeathttps://kb.vmware.com/kb/2113956)

So I have to disable VAAI ATS heartbeat.

 

But VSAN need VAAI ATS.

Disabling the VAAI functionality in ESXi/ESX (1033665) | VMware KB

"If you are running a VMware Virtual SAN environment, it is important that Hardware Assisted Locking (ATS) is not disabled."

 

Does anyone know about the "VSAN not need VAAI ATS heartbeat" ?

If the changing VSAN cluster host settings  "VAAI ATS heartbeat" disabled , and  not changing "VAAI ATS" enabled, are there no problem?

 

Our environment :

- vSphere 6.0u1 and VSAN 6.1

VMware ESXi compatible hardware for installing on Apple Mac hardware

Hello,

 

I am trying to install VMware ESXi on Apple mac hardware. This is my requirement.

I've read all the installation videos from VMware link and understood.

Free VMware vSphere Hypervisor, Free Virtualization (ESXi)

 

My requirement is, I must to use Apple mac to install ESXi and then install OS X (EL capitan) and virtualize the machine. I know that if we install ESXi, it will wipe out OS.

I have the following questions, please clarify.

 

1. When I am checking the Apple Mac hardware compatibility from this link, VMware Compatibility Guide - System Search

I found that there are 4 supported Apple Mac hardware displayed. Please see the picture below. My question is, Is this a correct list of Hardware compatibility to install ESXi on Mac hardware.

2. What is the cost of VMware ESXi product? I couldn't find anywhere. I only see free trial download option.

 

3. To get license for VMware vSphere Hypervisor I need to Register for the product. Getting this license is free or paid?

 

4. Just for testing purpose, Can I install vSphere client also in the Apple mac hardware where I installed ESXi? Why I am asking this is, According to documentation, vSphere client can be installed on the client machine and ESXi can be installed on the server machine. So, there are 2 machines here. But for testing purpose, Can I install both on the same Apple mac hardware and test? Is it possible?

Virtual SAN 6.0 and later versions support a quorum-based system where each component might have more than one vote to decide the availability of virtual machines. To be more precise, 50 percent of the votes that make up a virtual machine’s storage object must be accessible at all times. When fewer than 50 percent of the votes accessible to all hosts, the object is no longer available to the Virtual SAN datastore. This impacts the availability of your virtual machine. For objects to remain accessible in the cluster, an error-free full replica of object components must be available at all times.

 

 

If Virtual SAN cannot locate a full replica or more than 50 percent of the votes for the object, the virtual machine becomes inaccessible.

 

 

What is the vote? Why more than 50 percent of the votes for the object?

 

For example, I set FTT=1 for my VM. If 2 replicas of my VM object are intact, or there was a failure and only 1 entire remains - the VM (object) is accessible. So, why do we need any votes?

Changing Storage Policy Attributes

Hello,

 

Can I change these parameters:

 

  • Number of disk stripes per object (from 1 to 5, or from 5 to 1),
  • Number of failures to tolerate (from 1 to 2, or from 2 to 1),
  • Failure tolerance method (raid1 to raid5, or vice versa)

 

without  interrupting vSAN and VM processing? Will these changes bring serious performance degradation?

Metro Cluster - Best way to set DRS rules based on VM storage location ?

Dear community,

 

Based on vRO 7.0.1 and vCenter 6.0 U2, we have two sites in an active/active configuration.

Half LUNs are active on one site since the others are on the other side. All hosts connect to all LUNs so if we loose a site, we fail over on the second.

How to automatically reset DRS VM groups based on their disks' location ?

How ESX identifies CPUs, cores, hyperthreads,?

I have 2 physical socketed CPUs with 6 cores each; 12 CPUs. So to change or add affinity I would use for example Server 1 would have 0-5 and Server 2 could have 6-11. But now I have hyperthreading enabled. How would I assign a core and that core's hyperthread?

 

Would in ESX logicial CPU 12 be the hyperthread for CPU core 0? Or does it matter?

Edge Gateway: Convert to Advanced Networking

I've just right clicked an Edge Gateway in my vCloud Air VPC setup, and select "Convert to Advanced Networking" - the GUI now look different and more feature-rich - that's all great

 

BUT! - since I haven't got "Advanced Networking" in my subscription - why is this working ?

How to enable EVC with vcenter as vm (VCSA) ?

Hello,

I'm working with my customer to move his vSphere infrastructure from old to new servers. environment is the follow:

actual vSphere cluster:

some E5-2640 Sandy Brigde cpu + some other X5650 Westmere cpu

vsphere release 5.0

 

New infrastructure:

all E5-2604v4 Broadwell cpu

vspher 6.0 U2

 

My action plan would be to add actual servers to a new vcenter and then vmotion all vm (about 70) to new server; then remove old server from cluster.

To do this is mandatory to enable EVC in new vcenter, but it is only possible whit all registered vm powered off. But the only vm in this cluster id the vcenter.

 

The question is how to enable EVC when vcenter is a virtual machine, that should be turned off, but Ican not turn it off ?

Slow SAN Performance

Hello together,

 

we have an issue with our vm san throughput.

Following tests that we have done so far.

 

Build a SLES 11 SP3 VM with a RAW Device on NetApp Storage.

CISCO Blade Server

HP DL 380 G8 (latest driver versions) and higher vmware patch level 5.5, 2143827

NetApp Metro Cluster with DataOntap 8.2.4 FP2

ESXi Version 5.5 2068190

Brocade SAN Environment

 

When we write an 10 GB File on the RAW Volume with a 1 MB Block size, we get around 250 MB/s.

 

When we do the same on a Hardware SLES 11 SP3 and do that test on the same LUN we get around 1,5 GB/s.

The Hardware Server is using the same NetApp, same Brocade infrastructure and has only a 4 GB FC adapter.

Cisco UCS is using a 8 GB FC Adapter.

 

So the NetApp is performing well. Also the SAN infrastructure seems to be not the issue.

 

 

We did the same test also on a HP ESXi environment with a 4 GB FC adapter. Same result. Slow.

It doesn´t matter if we are using an paravirtualized or a LSI Logic Adapter at vmware level.

 

All our ESXi Server are configured with the NetApp VSC Plugin so that we are using the recommended settings for NetApp and VMware.

 

Any hints are appreciated

I did not interpret it . what is mean that ? These machines are open 1 years.is Servers consume this resource  or these server not consume this resource or users do not use this server.

Is it possible in a vRO view to display custom field data for a VM in a list view?

Im building a view containing list of snapshots and snapshot sizes, is there a possibility to fetch up any custom Fields from the VMs in this list?

(Annotation Fields, for eksempel Notes for the Virtual machine)

 

If so through what data Object is this visible?

i' installed Windows Server 2012 R2 as  guest OS, if i user 1 processor windows start normally, if i try to add more cores or processors windows doesn't start.

Hey everyone.  I keep getting an error when I try to run virtual machines...

For example When I try to run a OS X 10.10.3 machine to install it I get this error:


VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0)

A log file is available in "C:\Users\Y.N\Documents\Virtual Machines\OS X 10.10 (2)\vmware.log". 

 

 

You can request support. 

 

 

To collect data to submit to VMware support, choose "Collect Support Data" from the Help menu.

 

 

You can also run the "vm-support" script in the Workstation folder directly.

 

 

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

Thinapp Firefox ESR Issue - The address isn't valid error

Hello Guys,

 

I have recently struggling with Firefox ESR thinapp, actually it already happened in previous version 38.8.0 ESR, but I was able to fix that issue by this guide :

 

1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste pref and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.preferences.inContent preference to switch it from true to false

 

But since FF is changing the policy as stated in this from them :

 

Firefox 38 switched from a pop-up Options dialog to an "in tab" options page. Some users are finding that it doesn't work for them, but so far we haven't identified the reason - and this - Note: I don't know whether that will be in Firefox forever or is a transitional feature. As you've probably noticed, the long-term trend is to remove things that pop up.

 

It looks it already came and I am not able to fix that (should be since version 42) for the last 45.2.0 ESR version in thinapp. When I install the FF, all works, but when I get the packaged FF by thinapp, then it does not work. All like about:home, about:preferences, about:newtab etc. command does not work, even some https links.

 

I have tried to thinapp it by also older version, but no success. Currently we use last 5.2.1 .

 

Would you know what can be wrong there with FF? Anyone of you have the same?
